Understanding Collagen Loss: How to Protect Your Skin Before Lines Appear

Collagen gives skin its firmness and bounce. You can't see it decline until the loss has been building for years, which is why the best time to protect it is before the first lines settle in.
How collagen changes with age
Collagen production starts to slow in the mid-twenties. A commonly cited estimate puts the decline at around 1% a year through adulthood. The fibres that remain also become more fragmented and disorganised, so skin thins and loses its spring.
Menopause speeds this up. Studies suggest skin can lose up to 30% of its collagen in the first five years after menopause, as oestrogen falls.
What speeds up collagen loss
- UV exposure. The largest external cause of skin ageing. UVA reaches the dermis and breaks down collagen, even on cloudy days.
- Smoking. Reduces blood flow to the skin and increases the enzymes that degrade collagen.
- Glycation. Excess sugar binds to collagen fibres and makes them stiff and brittle.
- Poor sleep and chronic stress. Both slow the skin's overnight repair cycle.
Early signs to look for
- Fine lines that stay visible when the face is at rest
- Crepey texture under the eyes
- Pores that look larger, especially on the cheeks
- Pillow creases that take longer to fade in the morning
How microneedling helps
Microneedling creates thousands of controlled micro-injuries. The skin responds with its normal wound-healing cascade: a short inflammatory phase, then new tissue production, then months of remodelling. Early type III collagen is gradually replaced by stronger type I collagen.
Because remodelling is slow, results build over three to six months after a course. A typical course is three to six sessions, four to six weeks apart, followed by maintenance sessions as your practitioner advises.
A simple protection plan
- Broad-spectrum SPF 30 to 50 every morning, all year
- A vitamin C serum in the morning for antioxidant support
- A retinoid at night, paused around treatment days
- A microneedling course once early signs appear, then maintenance
FAQs
At what age should I start microneedling for collagen?
There is no fixed age. Many people start in their late twenties or thirties, when the first signs appear. A consultation is the best way to decide.
Do collagen supplements work?
Some studies of hydrolysed collagen supplements show modest improvements in hydration and elasticity, but results vary. They don't replace sun protection or in-clinic treatment.
This article is for education. It doesn't replace a consultation with a qualified practitioner, and treatment plans should be tailored to each client.
